The Construction
Carbery Fields Farm came into being as the result of a failed search for a boarding facility that met the criteria for turn-out and horse safety that were published in a University of Pennsylvania study. These included ample and safe turn-out and adequate protection from highway traffic. After several years without success, we decided to build our own. First we needed to find the land, which with some luck became available in Lebanon, CT.

41 Acres, 30 Acres in pasture, 1000' from the road traffic

Our indoor arena is contructed with a steep roof and conventional shingles (quiet in rain & no ice/snow falls in winter). The large 5'x10' gable vents and 12'x12' cupola keep it cool in summer. The vaulted trusses are visible, giving 21' of headroom.

Both the arena and the barn are built on full foundations. This is unusual, but important for dust management in the arena, and provides the horses with some lightning protection (electricity travels underground). The nearby trees have lightning protection to help direct it away from the barn. In the second picture the generator shed is visible, which can keep the farm running during hurricanes or ice storms.

The foundation keeps the correct moisture inside

The generator is connected through protected underground cables.

An outdoor arena is critical to dressage training. Our arena is constructed to USDF specifications for CDI competitions.  It has 5 meters on all sides beyond the 20X60 meter dressage surface and has built in drainage.

The base for the outdoor arena is over 24" deep

Its only a short walk to the barn

Putting the gazebo in place: judges need a place to sit, and horses need to get used to it!

Finally, fresh air is critical for the horse's health and training. Both the barn and the arena have large opening windows, but can be buttoned up securely if conditions merit.

With the shutters open, there is more open space than closed

Each stall has an aisle and outside door (fire escape)
