The Barn

The first objective of the facility at Carbery Fields Farm is to provide a safe and secure environment for the horses. The barn and arena are located 1000' from the public road to protect them from traffic (a leading cause of equine injury). There are motion detectors in the main aisle to alert us to a loose horse or an intruder. In addition, the only entrance is gated.

This gate prevents a loose horse from reaching the road

Once the horses' safety is achieved, our next concern is their mental and physical health. The long distance from traffic allows us to enjoy the country's peace and quiet. By committing 30 of our 41 acres to pasture, we average about 2 acres of grass per horse. Keeping the horse population small also adds to the overall serenity.

Along with grass, water is extremely important for horses. We have included Nelson automatic waterers in all the permanent stalls. The pastures are also all equipped with free standing Nelson waterers. All waterers are equipped with heaters which ensures the horses a continuous supply of fresh, clean water at 40 F. This increases the amount that horses drink, especially in winter. Of course, traditional buckets are available for horses that prefer them.

Water consumption is electronically monitored

To ensure that the waterers (along with the rest of the farm) work during blackouts, we are equipped with a large generator. This also serves to run the computer where we keep feed and medical records, both current and historical, for your horse. In addition, it can keep the sound system running so you can practice your kur.

The barn is designed to be open and airy. Each stall has a door to the aisle and the outside. The outside dutch door (fire escape) is protected with a stall guard that allows the horse to keep its head out. Important to those who understand that "a horse is where its head is".
